Basha Bekele has been in coffee since his childhood. Starting in 2022, he decided to try export his own coffees, as well as those smallholder farmers around him. Basha's Bombe drying station in Bensa is a cornerstone of the community he and his father have uplifted, even constructing a local church. With his own export license, Basha tends to 12 hectares of semi-forested coffee plots. Notably, Basha ensures fair practices by providing a second payment to the 126 producers he purchases cherry from, even after cherry prices surged this year. Like many smallholders in the Bensa region, Basha specializes in dry processes, experimenting with anaerobic fermentation and employing cherry flotation before meticulously drying his coffee on raised beds, some under shade. Basha is able to produce high quality coffee with the support of the nature surrounding him, to produce high end coffee from his washing stations. With altitudes ranging more than 2300 masl, this area is one of the highest growing regions in the Sidama area. Coffee trees grow intercropped with fruits and under semi-forest shade.
