Habtamu Fekadu Aga, the producer behind this coffee, is more than just a farm—it's a family legacy. Founded in 2015 by Aaga Dinsa, the grandson of a coffee farmer in Kuri kebele, the farm is a testament to generations of passion and dedication to coffee. The original farm spans 105 hectares, and with the help of 144 small shareholders, the operation covers 837 hectares across Wolega, Guji, and Jimma. Here’s a fun fact: each smallholder farm is like a piece of a puzzle that, when combined, forms the complete picture of Uraga’s unique flavor.

At Greater Goods, giving back to the community is something we care deeply about, so it’s inspiring to see that Habtamu Fekadu Aga shares that same commitment. Certified organic and Fair for Life, Habtamu Fekadu Aga contributes to the community with every pound of coffee sold. A portion of profits goes towards local development projects, from schools to healthcare, ensuring that the community thrives alongside the coffee.

Story

The washing station where Uraga is processed has a bit of history. Built in 2013, it changed hands a few times before Habtamu Fekadu Aga took over in 2020. They recently upgraded with a Penagos pulping machine in 2022, which helps ensure each batch is consistently high quality.

The station itself is a hive of activity. During peak season, over 100 seasonal workers join the 7 permanent staff to keep things running smoothly. Here’s another interesting fact: the water used at the station comes from a deep gravel rock well, and they take extra care to treat wastewater before it’s released, protecting the local environment.

After the coffee cherries are pulped and fermented, the beans are hand-washed and sun-dried on raised beds. This careful drying process takes 9-12 days, and the beans are regularly turned and inspected to ensure even drying. Quality control is a top priority here, with two managers overseeing moisture content and sorting to catch any defects. It’s all part of what makes Uraga such a standout coffee.

And if you’re into community impact, here’s something heartwarming: the washing station doesn’t just stop at coffee. They also provide agronomy education to local farmers, advance payments without interest, and are involved in renovating a nearby elementary school. It’s a wonderful example of how coffee can be a force for good, and we’re proud to support a producer who shares our values.
