Baroida Estate - PNG

Pink Bubblegum, Passionfruit, Syrupy

Limited Time Offering - Papua New Guinea might be surrounded by Indonesian islands, but PNG coffee has a style all its own. While Indos tend to have earthy, spicy notes, high quality PNGs lean fruitier and sweeter. This coffee - from Ben Colbran's Baroida Estate in the Eastern Highlands - knocks it out of the park with notes of pink bubblegum and passionfruit sweetness along with lychee and a syrupy body. That's due to the estate's meticulous processing methods. If you typically like Kenyas, or if you're looking for something outside of the Central American norm, this PNG just might be your new favorite thing.

Baroida Estate is located in the Eastern Highlands of Papua New Guinea. Ben Colbran founded the estate in the 1960s, and it remains a family business, with his son Nicol and grandchildren Chris and Rhett running operations. In 2010, the Colbran family joined a partnership that's allowed them to bypass large multinational exporters and focus on small-lot unique coffees. The estate now covers around 220 hectares and is divided into 29 plots, each plot a single variety. QC procedures are meticulous: each harvest batch is hand picked, processed, dried, and assessed in separation. Baroida Estate continues to push the envelope of what's possible in the challenging context of PNG.
And the name? It comes from the Baroida spirit, believed by locals to reside in a large river rock sitting in one of the main rivers flowing through the estate. This particular rock has stubbornly remained in the middle of the river for as long as anyone can remember, refusing to budge through the most severe floods, even when other rocks have been washed away.
